My 5yo insists on reading Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott or Star Wars by George Lucas. I cannot imagine he can follow either one very well but he loves these books! He begs me to read them during the day, at storytime, at bedtime. Hilarious. How do I encourage him to read on his level without discouraging this obsession with some fabulous books?
Is he reading? My son was bring home Star Wars books and we encouraged him to bring books he could read himself and they suddenly became more age appropriate.
My 5 year old is similar. He's been reading a lot of things that I'm not quite sure he understands. What I've done with him in the past is let him try it - read a chapter on his own out loud and then talk over that chapter with him. If he seems to be getting it then I let him go on with it. Otherwise, I try to find a book in a similar vein that is more reading-level appropriate (the Stages books are good for things like Star Wars). Good luck!
Great suggestions! He makes me read them to him. Quite spoiled! I think most of the problem is older brothers have huge chapter books and he doesn't want to feel left out!
This reminds me of that cute movie/book Matilda - she reads outrageously advanced books for her age! I don't have any suggestions though, so sadly, I am of no help.
Thank you for stopping by my blog. I think I've met you at Utah writers conferences before. :)

Is he reading? My son was bring home Star Wars books and we encouraged him to bring books he could read himself and they suddenly became more age appropriate.
ReplyDeleteMy 5 year old is similar. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestions! He makes me read them to him. Quite spoiled! I think most of the problem is older brothers have huge chapter books and he doesn't want to feel left out!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of that cute movie/book Matilda - she reads outrageously advanced books for her age! I don't have any suggestions though, so sadly, I am of no help.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by my blog. I think I've met you at Utah writers conferences before. :)
